![]() All transmitted messages in a given mode are exactly the same length. They are all synchronized to clock time, to within a tolerance of around 1 second all of the FT8 signals being transmitted at any time are in lock-step. All of these modes share similar characteristics. The best-known of these modes are FT8 and FT4, but there are many more. The second class of digital modes is a family of modes supported by the WSJT-X program and its offshoots. The digital engine software may also display some kind of tuning aid to help users to tune signals in accurately. This software, in conjunction with a sound card or codec, acts as a modem to translate when transmitting between characters, either stored in message files or input from the keyboard, and the varying frequencies that are actually transmitted, and on receive, between the received signals and the characters displayed on the screen. N1MM+ implements them with the help of either a hardware interface (TNC or TU) or more often, using “digital engine” software. These modes are conceptually quite similar to CW. There is no restriction on when a transmission may begin, other than the usual admonition to avoid having both parties to a QSO transmitting at once. These messages may be of arbitrary lengths and may contain any information that can be written down in letters and numbers. The first class of digital modes comprises “conversational” keyboard-to-keyboard modes in which the two parties to a QSO exchange messages made up of characters (letters, numbers or punctuation characters). There are two broad classes of digital modes supported by N1MM+. Open the settings screen and tap Connectors. This is how I have my Icom 7300 settings to control the Radio over the USB connection from a Computer for digital mode software such as JS8Call, Hamradio Deluxe and FLDigi. ![]() So you’ve got your Icom IC-7300 connected to your Computer but you can’t get JS8Call to transmit? Chances are your settings need putting right, here’s a list if settings that we know work for JS8Call. The final step is to select the Sound input and Output for JS8Call on the “Audio” tab, for Radios such as the IC -7300 you will see “USB Codec” in the name. Click on “Test CAT” if the button turns green then you’ve got it all set up for CAT control. Now open the settings window in JS8Call, go to the “Radio” tab and select your radio from the list in this example I am using the Icom IC-7300 if you have the same just make your settings the same as in the picture below. ![]() Radios such as the IC-7300 use the CP210x USB to UART bridge driver, so look for that in the list, make a note of the COM port name (in this case COM3. This will open the device manager window on your desktop.įind the entry in the list that says “Ports (COM & LTP) click the little arrow to the left of the Port Icon to see the next level down in the list, this will show the ports on your PC (you may have more than one) Then click on Device Manager in the List above To find the port (Windows 10) type “Device Manager” into the box next to the windows button You should install the drive BEFORE you connect the USB cable to the Radio. For this I installed Icoms driver for my IC-7300. ![]() This assumes that you have already installed the drive for your radio.
